THE MARION COUNTY HALL OF FAME

     The purpose of the Hall of Fame shall be to permanently recognize persons who have brought fame and honor to Marion County by their personal accomplishments here or afar, or have made direct and notable contributions to the Marion County area in education, the arts, business or industry, government or civil service, literature or media, history, sports, agriculture, and who have by their lives brought credit to Marion County.

All individuals being considered for the Hall of Fame shall be deceased for more than five years and must meet at least one, and preferably more than one, of the following:

  • Born in Marion County
  • Lived in Marion County for at least five years.
  • Died as a resident of Marion County.
  • Entombed in a Marion County cemetery.
In addition, they must have been associated with a significant historical, artistic, or humanitarian activity in Marion County.
Deadline for nominations each year is October 15. 
Names of inductees are announced the following April. 
Induction ceremony takes place in September.

1780-1864

Founder of Marion

 

Born April 27, 1780 at Litchfield Corners, Maine.

On March 4, 1821, came with his family to the present site of Marion, then known as Jacob’s Well.

With Alexander Holmes, filed the original plat of Marion on April 3, 1822.

Fostered early development of Marion.

Died October 6, 1864, age 84.

 

 

EDWARD HUBER

1837-1904

Father of Marion Industry

 

Born September 1, 1837 in Dearborn County, Indiana.

Came to Marion in 1865 to manufacture his first invention, a revolving hay rake.

Founder, President of Huber Manufacturing Company, 1875-1904.

Co-Founder, President of Marion Steam Shovel Company, 1883-1904.

Enabler of Marion’s progress.

Died August 26, 1904 at Marion, age 67.

 

 

WARREN G. HARDING

1865-1923

29th President of the United States of America

 

Born November 2, 1865 at Blooming Grove, Ohio.

Graduate of Ohio Central College, Iberia, 1882.

Owner, Publisher, and Editor of the Marion Daily Star, 1884-1923.

Ohio State Senator, 1901-1904.

Ohio Lieutenant Governor, 1905-1907.

United States Senator from Ohio, 1915-1920.

President of the United States, 1921-1923.

Died August 2, 1923 in San Francisco, age 57.

 

 

NORMAN M. THOMAS

1884-1968

Social Reformer, Pacifist, Author

 

Born November 20, 1884 at Marion, Ohio.

1901 graduate of Marion High School.

1905 graduate of Princeton University.

1911 graduate of Union Theological Seminary.

Ordained Presbyterian minister.

Six times Socialist Party candidate for United States President.

Chariman of World Council for Peace.

Died December 19, 1968 at Huntington, New York, age 84.

FLORENCE KLING HARDING

1860-1924

First Lady of the United States

 

Born August 15, 1860 at Marion, Ohio.

Attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, taught piano locally.

July 8, 1891 – Married Warren G. Harding in Marion.

Managed circulation, The Marion Daily Star.

1915-1920 – Active in Washington during Harding’s term as Senator.

1921-1923 – First Lady of the land, White House hostess, emulated by many successors.

Died November 21, 1924 in Marion, age 64.

 

 

STANLEY B. STOWE

1884-1980

Agricultural Leader

 

Born December 1, 1884 in Highland County, Ohio.

1908 graduate of Ohio State University, founded Delta Theta Sigma fraternity.

First Agricultural Agent in Clermont (1916) and Marion (1920) Counties.

Organized 4-H clubs in these counties.

1922 – Started Federal Land Bank in Marion.

1935 – A founder of Grange Mutual Casualty Company.

1924-1963 – Farmer, active in Ohio State and Bethlehem Granges.

Died February 16, 1980 at Marion, age 95.

HENRY M. BARNHART

1846-1890

Inventor and Industrialist

 

Born August 28, 1846 in Richland Township east of King’s Mills.

1883 – Patented a steam shovel, one of his twelve patents.

1884 – Co-founder of Marion Steam Shovel Company, manufacturer of dredging, excavating, and mining equipment.

From 1884 to 1890 served as director, vice president, general manager, as company grew to 150 employees.

Died September 25, 1890 in Marion, Ohio, age 54.

 

 

GEORGE W. KING

1854-1917

Mechanical Genius and Industrial Leader

 

Born February 19, 1854 in Richland Township near King’s Mills.

1882 – Patented hay carrier.

1884 – Co-founder of Marion Steam Shovel Company.

Served as president, director, engineer, superintendent, and general manager as company grew to 1,000 employees.

Furnished shovels for building Panama Canal and other worldwide projects.

Died September 2, 1917 in Marion, Ohio, age 63.

 

 

FREDERICK C. SMITH, M. D.

1884-1956

Medical Pioneer and Congressman

 

Born July 29, 1884 at Shanesville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

1908 – Graduated American School of Osteopathy, Kirksville, Missouri.

Studied medicine in Frankfurt, Germany and Vienna, Austria.

1925 - Founded Frederick C. Smith Clinic in Marion, first multi-specialty groups practice facility in central Ohio.

1936-1939 – Mayor of Marion.

1939-1951 - Eighth District United States Congressman.

Died July 16, 1956 in Marion, age 72.

MARY DENNISON GAILEY MANGRUM

1885-1972

Violin Prodigy, Concert Artist, Teacher

 

Born October 3, 1885 in Marion, Ohio.  Father Mayor C. P. Gailey.

Child prodigy on violin, performing at age seven.

1906 – graduated New England Conservatory of Music, Boston.  Concert artist.

1915-17 – Only violinist engaged by the great John Philip Sousa.  Entertained troops in World War I.  Married American Expeditionary Force Lt. Melvin J. Mangrum, 1919, France.

Taught must at Ferris Institute (Michigan), Concert Mistress, Grand Rapids (Michigan) Symphony, founded music center at city library.

Died November 1, 1972 in Grand Rapids, age 87.  Buried in Marion Cemetery.

 

 

HENRY A. TRUE

1879-1964

Banker, Historian, Philanthropist

 

Born July 26, 1879 in Marion, Ohio to pioneer family.  Friend of Norman Thomas.

1902 – graduated Princeton University.  Class valedictorian.

Business and historical interests contributed to development of Marion.

Member of the Marion Carnegie Public Library Board, 40 years.

1954 – formed the Stengel-True Museum with Frederick A. Stengel in Ozias Bowen home.

Long-time officer of the Marion County Bank.

Created the True Trust, a foundation continuing to benefit the community.

Died February 24, 1964 in Marion, age 84.

R. T. (RALPH TOBIAS) LEWIS

1877-1967

Real Estate Developer, Philanthropist, “Mr. Marion,” “Mr. Rotary”

 

Born April 13, 1877 in Leetonia, Ohio.  Came to Marion about 1897.

Husband of Abigail Harding, and then Hazel Kling Longshore.

Grocer, 1899-1916.  Vernon Heights Realty President, 1917-1967.

Force behind Chautauqua Pavilion, Hotel Harding, Palace Theatre, and other community projects.

Established Marion Rotary Foundation and endowed it.

Made major additional donations to Women’s Club and YMCA.

Died March 28, 1967, age 89, Orlando, Florida.

Buried in Marion Cemetery.

REV. MILTON E. LASHLEY

1892-1974

Community-Wide Social Ministry

 

Born on Barbados August 17, 1892.  Came to Ohio in 1917.

Served with U. S. Army Infantry in France in 1918.

56 years active ministry in Marion County and surrounding area.

Assistant Pastor, Quinn Chapel A. M. E. Church.

Although unable to read or write, he memorized the entire Bible.

25 years Scout Master, Troop 11.

Regularly opened his home and led activities for youth of all ethnic groups.

WMRN radio personality; active in Marion YMCA.

Died in Marion February 2, 1974, age 82.

 

DR. CHARLES E. SAWYER

1869-1924

Sanatorium Founder and Presidential Physician

 

Born January 24, 1860 near Wyandot, Ohio.

Educated in Nevada, Ohio schools.

Graduated Cleveland Homeopathic Hospital, 1881.

Engaged in general medical practice at LaRue, Ohio, 1881-1893.

Founded private sanatorium at LaRue in 1890.

Opened Dr. C. E. Sawyer Sanatorium in Marion in 1895.

In 1904 The Ohio Sanatorium Company, Marion, consolidated Sawyer Sanatorium and Park View Sanatorium, Columbus.

Appointed Physician to President Warren G. Harding, with rank of Brigadier General, in 1921.

Died in Marion September 23, 1924, age 64.

 

BENJAMIN WADDELL

1829-1915

Philanthropist and Humanitarian

 

Born February 23, 1829 in Richland Township, Marion County.

First male child in Marion baptized by Presbyterian minister.

Successful businessman, devoted churchman, and philanthropist.

In 1902 founded and built Marion County Children’s Home, now Waddell Children’s Village, operated by Marion County Children Services Board.

In 1903 established Waddell Ladies’ Home Association and built facility on Delaware Avenue.  Home finally located on East Center Street.

Although Ladies’ Home has closed, Association continues as active trust benefiting senior citizens.

Died in Marion May 19, 1915, age 86.

JUDGE JOHN BARTRAM

1804-1879

Pioneer and Civic Leader

 

Born June 12, 1804 in Redding, Connecticut.

Settled in Marion November 20, 1827.

A school teacher in winter; operated a brickyard in summer.

United States Commissioner, 1835-45.

Justice of the Peace, 1832-40.

Associate Judge, Court of Common Pleas, 1840-47.

Operated a general store with George H. Busby, 1840-46.

Practiced law from 1847 until his death.

State Representative, 1861-64; State Senator, 1870-72.

Died November 17, 1879, age 75.

 

 

JAMES H. GODMAN

1808-1891

Auditor of the State of Ohio

 

Born October 19, 1808 in Berkeley County (West) Virginia.

His family arrived in Ohio in 1812.

Admitted to the bar in 1818; settled in Marion soon after.

Marion County Prosecutor, 1834-35 and 1846-47.

State Representative, 1836 and 1840; State Senator, 1841-42.

Instrumental in bringing rail service to Marion in 1851.

In 1861, recruited soldiers for 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

An officer in 4th O. V. I.; brevetted Brigadier General after the Civil War.

Auditor of State of Ohio, 1864-72.

Died October 4, 1891, age 82.

JOSEPH MORRIS

1804-1898

Humanitarian

Conductor on the Underground Railroad

 

Born June 23, 1804 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

In 1821, moved with his parents to Columbiana County, Ohio.

Settled in Richland Township, Marion County, in 1837.

Established the first tree nursery in Marion County in the early 1840s.

His home was an important stop on the Underground Railroad.

During and after the American Civil War, he traveled throughout the United States distributing material aid and religious tracts to needy persons of all races.

Died September 6, 1898, age 94.

 

 

DR. FREDERICK A. STENGEL

1870-1954

Optometrist and Museum Benefactor

 

Born April 12, 1870 in Marion, Ohio.

As a child, he began a life-long hobby of collecting artifacts and stamps.

Opened jewelry store in Nevada, Ohio, 1891.  Moved to Altoona, Pennsylvania, 1894.

Earned degrees from Northern Illinois College and McCormick College.

Established optometry practice in Marion, 1901.

A founder and officer of the Ohio Optometric Association.

Treasurer of the American Optometric Association, 1928-1948.

In 1954, he and seven others founded the Marion County Historical Association.

Died August 18, 1954, age 74.  In his will he donated his collections to establish the Stengel-True Museum and provided funding for its operation and maintenance.

 

 

JAMES FRANCIS THORPE

WA-THA-HUCK (BRIGHT PATH)

1887-1953

"Athlete of the Century"

Born May 22, 1887 near Bellemont, Oklahoma.

A member of the Thunder Clan of the Sac and Fox Nation and grandson of Chief Black Hawk.

1904 – Entered Carlisle Indian Institute, excelling in football and track and field.

1912 – Gold medal performances at Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.

1913-1919 – Professional baseball player.

1915-1929 – Professional football player.

1920 – First president of the newly-formed National Football League.

Resided in Marion County in the 1920s.

1922-1923 – Player-coach of the Oorang Indians, an NFL team based in LaRue, Ohio.

Died March 28, 1953 at Lomata, California.  Buried at Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

DR. E. MAUD L. BULL

1872 - 1961

Physician and Church Leader

 

Born May 16, 1872 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan.

Moved with her family to Marion in 1876.

Graduate of American Medical Missionary College, Chicago, 1901.

Graduate of Ohio State University Medical School, 1907.

Medical practice in Marion in obstetrics and gynecology from 1907 to 1957.

Beloved for her ministrations to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

Delivered some 9,000 babies during her career.

One of six founders of Marion’s Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1888,

a supporter and “in-gatherer” for charity until her death.

Died December 24, 1961, age 89.

 

 

WILLIAM H. HOUGHTON

1864 – 1941

Manufacturer of Buggies and Sulkies

 

Born November 17, 1864 in Wayne County, Ohio.

Moved to Marion in 1895.

Partner in McMurray Sulky Company and Houghton-Merkel Company.

President of Marion Savings Bank.

Established Houghton Buggy Company in 1896.

Founded Houghton Sulky Company in 1904.

Company still known throughout the world as manufacturer of

top quality racing, training, and show horse vehicles.

Died March 3, 1941, age 76.

Buried in Marion Cemetery.
